Additional information/accomplishments:
Several committee accomplishments that can be noted over the recent years include:
- Resolution submitted to AAP addressing Children and Sexually Explicit Advertising. This document was distributed to the AAP Committee on Child Abuse and Neglect, and Committee on Communication. The Committee on Communication utilized this effort in its revision of "Children, Adolescents, and Advertising” statement as well as in its statement titled “Impact of Media” which included information about sexually suggestive advertising.
- Position statement regarding the best practice standards for child abuse pediatrics physicians and advanced practice nurses working with Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs) in performing pediatric sexual abuse evaluations. This effort has fostered a new relationship with the Ohio Chapter IAFN as we work together to provide medical and forensic care to the sexually abused patient.
- Revision of the Ohio Department of Health Child and Adolescent Sexual Abuse Protocol. The original document published in 2000, was revised and included relevant topics such as assessment of intimate partner violence, HIV post-exposure prophylaxis, care of the child with special health care needs, DNA technology in evidence collection, optimal health-care settings for children and adolescents, and the relationship between child abuse pediatrician and sexual assault nurse examiner. - Membership involvement in the efforts in Ohio to adopt law reform to change an “Abuse, Neglect, Dependency” model of child protection to a “Child in Need of Protective Services (CHIPS)” model. Participation included focus groups with policy makers and active involvement in the proposed legislation.
- Content assistance in the development of the Medical Protocol for the Ohio Drug Endangered Children Protocol Tool Kit. This comprehensive document offers a multi-disciplinary approach to the evaluation, scene investigation and protection of drug endangered children.
