Program Initiatives
The Ohio AAP Chapter is in an exciting period of development right now, with many great programs already implemented such as:
- Reach Out and Read Ohio - The mission of the Reach Out and Read Ohio (ROR Ohio) program is to make literacy promotion a standard part of pediatric primary care, so that children grow up with books and a love of reading. The ROR model uses the existing structure of pediatric primary care, in which parents of young children have regular, one-on-one, developmentally focused visits with pediatricians during the first years of a child's life. By integrating literacy into well-child visits, pediatricians promote the acquisition of spoken and written language skills in young children, thereby increasing the likelihood of eventual school success.
- Maximizing Office Based Immunizations (MOBI) - Maximizing Office Based Immunization (MOBI) is a free statewide provider immunization education and training program developed for health-care providers. During the MOBI training, health-care providers receive information that can be used to achieve the complete and timely immunization of infants and young children in Ohio.
- Autism Diagnosis Education Pilot Project - This project will engage families, child care providers, educators, health-care professionals, and leaders in their communities in identifying opportunities to promote early identification of autism using standardized methods, while facilitating regional coordination of linkages with timely, effective services for children with autism spectrum disorders.
- Healthy, Strong and Ready for Teens: Parents and Doctors Working Together to Prepare Girls for Adolescence - A day long symposium for parents and medical care providers of pre-adolescent girls between 8-12 years old, to discuss the distinctive physical, emotional and mental aspects of being a pre-teen girl. This symposium focuses on educational and interactive sessions involving nutrition, bone health, exercise, healthcare, vaccines, social health and safety, and emotional health; and how parents and medical care providers can help create healthier lifestyles for adolescent girls.
- "My Story" Foster Care Program - Every person has a story to tell, and this is no different for children. The "My Story" Foster Care Program was developed to give Ohio's foster care children a chance to tell their story. Physicians are in a unique position to have one-on-one conversations with children at the initial well-child foster care medical exam. The "My Story" program provides medical care providers with information in caring for these children, and provides bags for the foster children that include a portable medical record, social/emotional information for the foster parent, and a variety of other tools to help children become more comfortable in their new environment.
- Chapter Quality Network (CQN) Asthma Pilot Project - An exciting new program in which the National Office of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is providing the Ohio Chapter with tools, resources and technical support to lead a quality improvement (QI) effort among 10 to 15 member practices to improve care for children with asthma.
