Maximizing Office Based Immunization (MOBI) is a free statewide provider immunization education and training program developed for health-care providers. This continuing education program, which trains practices in techniques to improve immunization rates in their practice, is offered through the Ohio Chapter, American Academy of Pediatrics, and funded by the Ohio Department of Health with technical assistance from the National Immunization Program, Centers for Disease Control & Prevention.
MOBI is a one hour in-office continuing education quality improvement program provided by trained vaccine experts. Target offices include pediatric and family medicine practices throughout Ohio. Ohio AAP annually trains more than 100 experts to conduct these progams. MOBI aims to raise immunization rates among Ohio's children by teaching physicians and their entire staff evidence-based strategies to overcome barriers to immunization.
SAVE THE DATE - The next half-day MOBI Train-the-Trainer Workshop will be held Thursday, March 18, 2010 at the Doubletree Hotel in Worthington/Columbus. The full-day MOBI Train-the-Trainer Workshop for NEW trainers, and for trainers who are unable to attend the March training, will be held on Thursday, April 15 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the MOBI Offices in Columbus.

Study shows patient-held vaccination records improve immunization rates – A recent study in the March 2010 issue of “Pediatrics” reports that the use of patient/parent-held vaccination records is an easily implemented strategy that is associated with increased immunization rates. The results indicate that this simple intervention has a meaningful impact on vaccination rates, with the potential to affect clinical practice and public health planning. A greater effect was seen in groups at risk for under immunization. Click here to view the study.
Study linking autism and MMR vaccine retracted - Twelve years after Dr. Andrew Wakefield published his research in The Lancet, an international medical journal, claiming that the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine causes autism, the journal formally retracted his paper yesterday (Feb. 2, 2010). The U.K. General Medical Council's Fitness to Practice Panel concluded that Dr. Wakefield provided false information in the report and acted with "callous disregard" for the children in the study. The council is considering if Dr. Wakefield is guilty of serious professional misconduct. A positive finding could cause him to lose his medical practice. Full story.
Tdap required for 7th graders - The Ohio Department of Health has added Tdap to the list of immunization requirements for 7th graders for 2010, so there are many 6th graders who will need the vaccine before next fall. Doctor's offices are reminded to stock up on Tdap vaccines and to take advantage of sick visits as opportunities to catch pre-teens up on their immunizations.

Hib Alert...
With five cases of invasive Hib disease reported in Minnesota, including one death, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) emphasizes the importance of immunizing children. The Hib shortage is expected to last into mid-2009. It is critically important that all children receive their primary series of three doses of a Hib-containing vaccine on schedule during this shortage. CDC recommends that pediatricians should use whichever formulation is available locally to keep infants on schedule. For more information, go to the CDC Web site.
